Internship: Neville Public Museum
This blog will act as my means to record my experiences at the Neville Public Museum. I will be working as an Intern there from January until May of 2008 to satisfy my requirments through the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as well as my own academic development as this will allow me to work outside of the classroom. I will post a brief summary of my activities after each day of work and use this to reflect on my experiences.
About Me
I am finishing my fourth year at the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay. I will be graduating this Spring with a B.A. in History. I plan on attending Graduate School shortly thereafter. I am currently working on a research project which examines the evolution of America's "beer culture" over the last 30 years.

Today I started working on the WWI spreadsheet again. I went between that and ARGUS and inserted the Artifact Class, Type, and Name. I did that up until the early afternoon when Trevor gave me an update on the Bellin exhibit. He wanted me to go through the list I gave him as well as some of the other medical artifacts and put together about a dozen or so artifacts that look interesting and are fun to see. He then wanted me to write up the object labels which made me feel great because it's a complete 180 from what I've been doing.

Day 45
Today I started out combing through any other medical artifacts that I might have passed over in the cardfile. I spent the rest of my morning gathering sources for my Bio of Quiren Groessl. Once I returned from class I plugged along on the WWI spreadsheet and then flagged certain locations that I caught while looking through the medical artifacts where the location was from the old museum. This way I can go through ARGUS and fix them.

Day 44
Today I went through a huge stack of inventory records tht Louise gave me to search. It consisted mainly of all the medicinal bottles that the museum has, and wouldnt you know it, the one I need wasn't listed. I worked more on the WWI artifact list since I hit a dead end. I am not entirely sure Trevor will use those bottles because they might be too close to apothecary artifacts, although they werent filed as such.

Day 43
Today was a shorter one since I had class this morning. When I arrived, I used what time I had to find the location of the last few artifacts, which I did. I even found a few of the ones I have on my list with the old location and it was never updated. There are a few I am having trouble location, mainly the medicine bottles because there are a million of them.

Day 42
Today I was back in Collections working on the medical artifact list for Trevor. Its all assembled and mostly complete, but there was a few artifacts in ARGUS that didnt have a location and the cardfile didnt have one either. So I spent most of my time going through the area where these items were typically stored and looked through them and wrote down their location. I am going to assume their is an easier way to do this, but I got the job done for the most part. There are a few I will need to find tomorrow.

Day 41
Today I started working on a favor for Trevor. He is out for the week and he's working on a small exhibit for Bellin Hospital's 100th Anniversary. So he wanted me to look at all of the medical artifacts we have post-1900 that would be used in a doctor's office or by a General Practicioner. I composed a spreadsheet of roughly 25 artifacts. I excluded the ones that pertained to the military, dentistry, surgery, etc.

Day 40
I spent this morning back in Conservation finishing sewing the velcro strip to the flag. Dennis, Trevor, and I then took it into the WWI exhibit and hoisted it up high against the back wall so you see it hanging as soon as you enter the exhibit. I spent the rest of my afternoon in Collections working on the artifact spreadsheet.

Day 39
Today I was back in Conservation working on the flag. I had finished a strip of velcro on what I thought was Muslin. It turned out to be an elastic mesh netting, which is actually what I buy at the homebrew store and they call it muslin. I had to start over since the weight of the flag will stretch the material and not give a good bond. It didnt take me too long to finish the same strip again, this time on actual Muslin. I finished both srtips and began to sew it directly on the flag. I should finish it tomorrow and be able to hang it in teh WWI exhibit.

Day 38
I came in today after my Ancient Rome midterm and kept working on the spreadsheet. Trevor came and asked me if I knew how to sew and I said I did since I learned how in the Marines. Im not sure when Ill start this, but I will be sewing on some muslin cloth to the back of a flag which was used during a WWI funeral.

Day 37
This morning I continued work on the artifact spreadsheet, but I was in the Library where the computer doesnt have Excel so I was limited to doing research. Trevor gave my brain a rest later in the morning and throughout the afternoon when he gave me a few hundred surveys which needed to be folded to a size which would make them fit into an envelope. It was small "busy work", but was a refreshing change of pace.

Day 36
Today I continued to work on the spreadsheet. When I came back from my class I met with Trevor to discuss what I had done and what needs to be done. It was nice because he showed me a few things about the catalog system which I didn't know and it will make the rest of my job easier.

Day 35
Today consisted mainly of playing "musical computers" all morning since Anna was back in Collections and I moved between the Library and the Collections office depending on who needed which computer for a while. The afternoon was spent in the back computer in Collections working on the artifact spreadsheet. It went a little smoother once I realized that a "D" next to the ID number means that it is in the Duchateau file.

Day 34
I started today back in Collections where I printed off the first few columns of the spreadsheet which also contained all items being examined. I made my job a little easier by taking the list out into the Collections office and going through the card catalog and updating the list right there instead of walking back and forth the whole day. I think its safe to say I definetely got more done today than other days.
Wednesday, March 5, 2008
Day 33
Today I was back in Collections again and spent all of my afternoon jotting down catalog numbers and looking up in the file any information which is missiong from the list, mainly the name of the donor, date of acquisition, and background.

Day 32
Today was spent back in Collections continuing the artifact spreadsheet for the rejected WWI artifacts. I finished transferring all known data about the 143 artifacts, and now the fun part begins which involves searching all available resources for information which sheds light on any importance the items hold.
